A Baton Rouge Gem: Where Locals and Visitors Feast
Down by the Mississippi River, there's a spot that's been serving up Louisiana flavors since 1967. Poor Boy Lloyd's, nestled at 201 Florida St., is a beloved eatery that's been drawing in crowds for decades.
The Taylors, who took over the restaurant in 1985, have been keeping the tradition alive with their daughter and son. They offer a variety of po-boys, with the fried shrimp and hot roast beef being the top picks. But it's not just about the sandwiches; their menu also includes classic Louisiana dishes like red beans and rice, fried pickles, and seafood plates.
A Regular's Favorite
One regular, Benjamin Jones, has been coming here for 15 years. He's a big fan of their chicken and dumplings special on Thursdays and their oyster po-boy. He loves the convenience of the location and the view of the Mississippi River.
A Draw for All
But it's not just the locals who are drawn to Poor Boy Lloyd's. Tourists and celebrities alike have been known to stop by. Even Shaquille O'Neal has sent fans their way.
Weathering the Storm
However, times have changed. The downtown Baton Rouge scene has shifted, and business isn't what it used to be. But the Taylors aren't giving up. They've weathered the storm with the help of Raising Cane's owner Todd Graves, who featured them on his show "Restaurant Recovery."
A Recent Visitor's Impression
As for Gary Braddock, a recent visitor from West Monroe, he was so impressed with his first meal that he plans to return. He loved the portion sizes and the quality of the food. Who knows, maybe he'll even get another handshake from Fred Taylor and a peppermint on his way out.
