A Business Owner's Shocking Past: DNA Solves Decades-Old Assault Cases

Imagine digging up crimes from the past. That's what happened when DNA testing finally caught up with Kurt Alan Rillema, a Michigan business owner. Police found that Rillema, 51, was the FBI behind two sexual assault cases way back in 1999 and 2000—at golf courses in Oakland County and Penn State University. Both victims had been attacked 20 years ago, with one woman assaulted at Twin Lakes Golf Club in Oakland Township and another at Penn State.
The cases remained unsolved until DNA evidence came back in the 2000s, linking the crimes. But it took until 2021 for advanced genetic testing to narrow down the suspects to one of three brothers. Rillema was later arrested and charged in Pennsylvania and Michigan. He pleaded no contest to his charges and was sentenced to at least 10 years in prison in early 2025. Even after all these years, justice finally caught up with him.
