A California Academic's Journey to Finland: Finding Peace and Purpose

Rosanna Guadagno, a psychology professor from California, has called five different US states home. But she never felt truly settled. This bold decision was inspired by a desire for a better life, especially for her LGBTQ+ children. Guadagno's journey began in the Bay Area, where she grew up and earned her psychology degree. Her academic career led her to Phoenix, Alabama, Virginia, and Texas. Each move brought new experiences, but none felt like home. Alabama's community was warm, but she faced racism and felt like an outsider. Texas, with its in-your-face politics and harsh commutes, was a struggle.

Returning to California didn't solve her problems either. The high cost of living and personal losses, including her mother's death and a divorce, left her feeling lost. The final straw was the rollback of LGBTQ+ rights and women's reproductive rights. She feared for her kids' safety and future. Finland offered a fresh start. The education system focuses on well-being, healthcare is affordable, and the quality of life is high. The move has been challenging, with long winter nights and missing loved ones back home. But overall, it's been the right choice for her family.
