A Call for Respect in Encinitas City Council
The Encinitas City Council is currently grappling with a challenging situation. Anger and disrespect have become prevalent, and while this is not a new issue, it has significantly worsened in recent times.
A Glimpse into the Past
Back in 2006, the council faced similar problems. Teresa Arballo Barth, a council member at the time, took proactive steps to foster a more respectful environment. She addressed her colleagues by their titles and last names, actively listened to public speakers, and treated everyone with dignity. Her efforts bore fruit, and over eight years—including two as mayor—the atmosphere improved.
The Current Crisis
Unfortunately, the situation has regressed. Toxic behavior has resurfaced, primarily directed at Councilwoman Joy Lyndes and certain members of the public. This behavior is unacceptable and undermines the council's purpose.
A Call for Leadership
The council should embody leadership, not engage in mean-spirited and false accusations. Mayor Bruce Ehlers has a crucial role to play in setting a positive example. He must ensure that discussions remain respectful and productive.
A Reminder of Their Purpose
It is time for the council to reflect on why they were elected. Their focus should be on improving Encinitas, not on internal conflicts. The community deserves better.
