A Campus Under Fire: The Florida State Shooting
Florida, Tallahassee, USASaturday, April 19, 2025
The victims were not students. One was Robert Morales, a university dining coordinator who had worked at Florida State since 2015. The other was Tiru Chabba, a 45-year-old father of two from Greenville, South Carolina, who worked for a food service vendor. The injured were expected to make full recoveries, with most already upgraded to good condition.
The suspect’s background added another layer of intrigue. Ikner was a member of the sheriff’s office’s youth advisory council and had participated in various training programs. His mother, Deputy Jessica Ikner, was on duty at a nearby middle school during the shooting. She was reassigned to the property crimes unit and later took personal leave.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear. Authorities are investigating, but no official statement has been released. The university canceled classes through Friday, and athletic events were called off through Sunday. Governor Ron DeSantis ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in memory of the victims and to honor the bravery of first responders.
