A Century-Old Message from the Sea
On a beach in Western Australia, a family discovered a bottle with a surprising secret. Inside were letters from two soldiers, Malcolm Neville and William Harley, written in 1916. They were aboard a ship heading to France for World War I.
The letters were cheerful:
- Neville told his mom about the good food.
- Harley hoped the finder would be well.
A Long Burial
The bottle didn’t travel far. It likely spent over 100 years buried in the sand. Recent big waves probably uncovered it. The paper was wet but still readable, allowing the family to find the soldiers' relatives. The bottle was in great shape, with no barnacles or sun damage.
The Discovery
Deb Brown, who found the bottle, said they often clean the beach. They never ignore trash, which is how they spotted the bottle.
- Harley's granddaughter, Ann Turner, was amazed. She felt like her grandfather had reached out from the past.
- Neville's great nephew, Herbie Neville, felt pride and sadness. He wished his great uncle had survived the war.
A Glimpse into the Past
The letters give a glimpse into the soldiers' lives. They were happy and hopeful, even on a rough sea. It's a reminder of the past and the people who lived through it. The find brings history to life in a personal way.
