A Comedian's Insult: Aubrey Plaza's Response

Aubrey Plaza, an actress with Puerto Rican roots, wasn't pleased with comedian Tony Hinchcliffe's joke at a recent Trump rally. During a warm-up act for Trump at Madison Square Garden, Hinchcliffe made some nasty remarks about Puerto Rico and several other groups. He called Puerto Rico a "floating pile of garbage, " which didn't sit well with Plaza. At the WSJ Magazine’s 2024 Innovator Awards, she let her feelings be known. She said, "As a Puerto Rican woman, I just want to say something about the racist joke made at that Trump rally. Most of my family is from Puerto Rico. I'm glad my sweet grandmother isn't here to hear that disgusting remark. If she were, she'd tell Tony Hinchcliffe to go somewhere unpleasant. "

Other Puerto Rican celebrities, like Ricky Martin, Bad Bunny, and Jennifer Lopez, have also spoken up against Hinchcliffe's joke. Trump tried to distance himself from the controversy, saying he didn't know Hinchcliffe. He even called the rally a "love fest, " but other speakers made derogatory comments about Vice President Kamala Harris. The Trump campaign tried to turn the tables by bringing up a comment from President Joe Biden. Biden had called Puerto Ricans "good, decent honorable people" and criticized Hinchcliffe's demonization of Latinos. Trump's team seized on this, claiming Biden called all Trump supporters "garbage. " However, the White House clarified that Biden was only talking about Hinchcliffe and his remark.
