A plea deal has been struck in the Idaho murder case, but not everyone is happy about it. The father of one of the victims, Kaylee Goncalves, is speaking out against the agreement.

Father of Victim Feels Blindsided

Steve Goncalves, Kaylee's father, says he was blindsided by the news and feels the deal doesn't bring justice for his daughter or the other victims.

"We can't just let people come from other states and kill our kids while they're sleeping. It's sad, it's disgusting, and I can't pretend like I feel like this is justice."

Details of the Plea Deal

The accused, Bryan Kohberger, has agreed to plead guilty to all charges. This includes:

  • Four counts of first-degree murder
  • One count of burglary

In return, he will serve:

  • Four consecutive life sentences for the murders
  • Up to 10 years for the burglary

Prosecutors Defend Their Decision

Prosecutors have defended their decision, citing the risks of a trial and the heavy toll a lengthy trial could take on the families.

"This is a sincere attempt to seek justice. We acknowledge that some families may disagree but believe this is the most realistic path to closure."

Families' Frustration with Short Notice

The Goncalves family is also frustrated with the short notice. They were given little time to prepare for the change of plea hearing.

"It feels like the trial is over in an instant, after two and a half years of waiting."

Sentencing and Restitution

Sentencing is expected to take place in late July, assuming Kohberger enters the guilty plea as planned.

As part of the deal, Kohberger will waive his right to appeal. The state will also seek restitution for the victims' families to cover funeral expenses and other costs.
