A Fresh Look at Gaza: Who's Failing Whom?

Gaza, a narrow coastal strip, has been the stage for a long-standing conflict between Israel and Palestine. As we mark another anniversary of the 2012 Hamas attack, it's clear that the international community's approach to this dispute hasn't worked. Despite heavy civilian casualties in Gaza, Western countries still side with Israel. Sadly, Western governments value their relationship with Israel more than human rights and international laws. They label Palestinian resistance as terrorism, ignoring the terrible impact on civilians. The so-called "rules-based international order" seems to be falling apart. For instance, Josep Borrell, the European Union's top diplomat, called Gaza a "graveyard of humanitarian law principles." This isn't just about what's happening there; it also shows how Western values are crumbling. Media plays a big role in making this conflict seem balanced. Headlines often show Palestinians as unfortunate victims and Israelis as the real targets. This language matters because it affects how people see things and can spread false information. Journalists are sometimes blocked from Gaza, which limits what we know. Universities, known for promoting free thought, have also failed in this area. Pro-Palestinian voices are silenced, and campuses often crack down on such views. People mix up anti-Zionism with antisemitism, which hurts honest debate and free speech. Even with these problems, there's still hope. Activists, students, and Jewish allies are standing up for human rights, even if it risks their careers or safety. Grassroots movements are growing stronger, and Palestinian resilience is inspiring many. The truth is, the root of this conflict is the ongoing occupation. It's high time Western institutions admit they've failed. Institutions that once fought for human rights have compromised their values. The only way forward is to commit to human rights and justice for everyone, regardless of religion or background.
