A Fresh Start for Park Heights: Big Plans and Bigger Dreams
In Baltimore's Park Heights, a significant transformation is underway. A coalition of organizations has united to develop a mixed-use community, securing $44 million for the project. The initiative will introduce affordable housing and business spaces, with a focus on Belvedere Avenue, near the Pimlico Race Course.
Key Players and Vision
The project is spearheaded by:
- BRIDGES Community Development Corporation
- Bon Secours Unity Properties
- WinnCompanies
Together, they have acquired 10 vacant lots, some of which have been unused since the 1990s. The final commercial property will be removed by 2026.
A New Beginning
One of the lots, formerly an auto shop, will be demolished to create an entrance for the new development. This project is more than just construction—it's about revitalizing the community.
The Inspiration Behind the Project
The vision originated from Michael Gaines, President of BRIDGES Community Development Corporation, and his pastor at Manna Bible Baptist Church. Their dream was to redevelop the area around the church, including:
- Renovating vacant homes
- Expanding the church's food pantry
- Creating a new park
Residences at Belvedere Place
The new affordable housing will be named Residences at Belvedere Place. The name "Belvedere" comes from Italian words meaning "beautiful view." The hope is that the positive changes will attract residents and foster growth.
Timeline and Goals
Construction has already begun and is expected to be completed by spring 2027. The ultimate goal is to restore vibrancy to Park Heights, with the faith community leading the way in neighborhood revitalization.
