A Gang's Deadly Attack: What Happened in Pont Sondé?

In the small town of Pont Sondé, central Haiti, a violent gang called Gran Grif launched an attack that left at least 70 people dead. Among the victims were three infants and ten women. The attack happened on Thursday in Artibonite department, known for its agriculture and located about 50 miles north of Port-au-Prince. Gang members used automatic rifles to kill their targets and set fire to homes and vehicles. This devastating event forced many residents to flee their homes. The Haitian Ministry of Health tried to help but faced challenges due to the tense security situation.

The leader of Gran Grif, Luckson Elan, was recently sanctioned by the US for his gang's brutal activities. Gang violence in Haiti has been getting worse, with attacks becoming more daring and violent. This year alone, over 3,600 people have lost their lives to such violence. In June, foreign security forces arrived in Haiti as part of the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission. After Thursday's attack, the UN called for more aid for this mission and demanded an investigation into the incident. They also asked for reparations for the victims and their families. Haiti's prime minister, Garry Conille, offered his condolences and promised a stronger law enforcement response. He emphasized that the attack was not just against individuals but against the entire Haitian nation.
