A Gleaming Comet Captivates Massachusetts
Concord, MA, USAWednesday, October 16, 2024
Experts advise getting away from city lights and using peripheral vision to spot the comet. This particular comet, coming from the outermost reaches of the solar system, is about half an astronomical unit away from Earth, or roughly 50-60 million miles. Unfortunately, it's pulling away from the sun and will eventually fade from view forever. Rumors that it orbits every 80,000 years are false; this is likely its first and last appearance in the inner solar system.
Viewers from across Massachusetts and around the world reported sightings of the comet. Though it will be gone for good after this week, other comets are expected to make appearances every five to ten years, offering future chances to witness these celestial phenomena.
