A Hero's Journey Ends: Israel Brings Home Its Last Hostage
Israel has finally brought home the remains of its last hostage from Gaza. Ran Gvili, a brave police officer, was killed on October 7, 2023, and his remains were taken to Gaza. His family has been waiting for this moment for a long time. The Israeli government has now identified his remains and will bring him home for burial.
This is a big deal because it means that, for the first time since 2014, there are no Israeli hostages left in Gaza. Israeli President Isaac Herzog said that the whole country has been praying and waiting for this moment. He said that now, the circle is closed.
Efforts to Identify and Bring Ran Home
The Israeli military worked hard to find and identify Ran's remains. They worked with the National Center of Forensic Medicine and the Israel Police to make sure that they had the right person. Once they were sure, they told Ran's family that they could finally bring him home.
US President Donald Trump Celebrates the News
US President Donald Trump also celebrated the news. He said that his team had done an amazing job and that they had brought back all of the living and dead hostages. He said that most people thought that it would be impossible to do, but his team made it happen.
Moving Forward with the Gaza Peace Plan
Israel had been waiting to open the Rafah crossing and move on to the next phase of the Gaza peace plan until all of the hostages were brought home. Now that Ran's remains have been found, they can move forward. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that this was an outstanding accomplishment for Israel. He said that they had promised to bring everyone home, and they had kept that promise.
Remembering Ran Gvili
The Hostages and Missing Families Forum also spoke about Ran. They said that he was a true friend and that everyone loved him. They said that he was proud to be a police officer and that he wore his blue uniform with pride. Ran was only 24 years old when he died. He left behind his parents, Talik and Itzik, his brother Omri, his sister Shira, and an extended family.
Ceasefire Agreement and Next Steps
As part of the ceasefire agreement reached in October, Hamas agreed to release all of the hostages, dead and alive, who were taken to Gaza on October 7, 2023. The last 20 living hostages were released in mid-October. Hamas said that the return of Ran's remains shows that they are committed to the first phase of the ceasefire agreement. They said that Israel must now complete all of the terms of the ceasefire agreement.
Netanyahu's office said that the Rafah crossing would open after the conclusion of the search for Ran's remains. However, the crossing would only be open to pedestrians, not for commercial goods or humanitarian aid. It is unclear when the crossing will open. An Israeli official said that the crossing would be operated by European Union officials and Palestinian forces, with oversight from Israel's Shin Bet security service.
Dismantling Hamas's Military Capabilities
Netanyahu said that Israel is now at the threshold of the next stage: dismantling Hamas's military capabilities and demilitarizing the Gaza Strip. He said that the next stage is not reconstruction. He said that the demilitarization of Hamas will happen the easy way or the hard way.
