A Conservation Success Story
Long ago, people brought in cats and owls to control rats, but it backfired. The cats and owls started attacking the native birds. It was a mess. But then, in 1997, things started to change.
A South African company bought the island and started a project called the Noah's Ark Project. They removed the invasive species and brought back the native ones. Now, the island is home to:
- Sea turtles
- Aldabra tortoises
- Hundreds of birds that were once on the brink of extinction.
The island's luxury resort funds this conservation work. It's a unique mix of opulence and nature.
A Butler at Your Beck and Call
Guests can call their personal butler anytime, day or night. They can even have breakfast at 4 a.m. if they want.
But the island's deputy general manager, Nicolas Louys, won't reveal the names of the high-profile guests who stay there. He's bound by non-disclosure agreements.
Meet Brutus, the 150-Year-Old Tortoise
One of the island's most famous residents is a 150-year-old Aldabra tortoise named Brutus. He's seen it all, from the island's farm days to its current luxury status. He's even had a few run-ins with golf carts, so now he wears small white reflectors on his shell.
