A Historic Play: Texans Score Two Points on Blocked Extra Point
Houston, USASunday, January 12, 2025
Houston coach DeMeco Ryans was initially focused on the long touchdown that preceded the extra point attempt. “I wasn’t really looking until I heard the big thump and we got it, ” he said. “I just see (Ross) pick the ball up and he’s coming towards me. I couldn’t do anything but smile. ”
Since 2015, the NFL has awarded two points for an extra point returned to the end zone. Before this rule change, a blocked extra point recovered by the defense was a dead ball. This historic play was the ninth extra point returned for a score since the rule change. It had happened once in the 2024 regular season when the Eagles did it against Tampa Bay. Additionally, there have been five 2-point conversion tries returned for two points by the defense during the same period.
