A Lawyer's Personal Journey: Making History at the Supreme Court
Tennessee, USAMonday, December 2, 2024
The legal battle isn't just about Tennessee. Several U. S. states have recently enacted bans on gender-affirming healthcare for transgender minors, covering everything from school sports to bathroom usage rules. These laws have sparked debates across the country. Yet, major medical groups like the American Medical Association and American Academy of Pediatrics support such care, emphasizing it's safe when properly administered.
Tennessee’s argument isn’t about opposition to transgender rights; they believe that treatments like puberty blockers and hormones might have risks for young people and want to ensure minors understand the long-term consequences before making such decisions. State Solicitor General Matt Rice, who will argue for Tennessee, has an interesting background. He used to be a minor league baseball player and served as a law clerk for Justice Clarence Thomas, who had differences with Strangio's previous cases.
Strangio is determined to keep fighting for transgender youth, even with vacillating federal support. He wants to ensure that they have access to healthcare that wasn't available in his youth. The Supreme Court's decision is expected this summer.
