A Life Well-Played: Remembering Enfield's Sports Legend

Bob Mercik, a name synonymous with Enfield athletics, passed away at 87. He was no ordinary athlete – excelling in baseball, football, and basketball from his early days. Born in Springfield, Bob's journey began with local sandlot games and continued at A. D. Higgins School. His high school years at Enfield High were marked by incredible achievement: captain and MVP of both football and baseball teams, and a key player on the championship-winning 1953 football team. He also excelled academically, being cum laude and actively involved in school life. After high school, Bob continued his athletic career at American International College, playing varsity football and baseball. His skills as a running back and defensive cornerback, as well as a talented hitter in baseball, earned him the AIC Alumni Award for student-athlete of the year. He graduated second in his class academically.

Bob's legacy in Enfield went beyond his personal achievements. He was inducted into the Enfield Athletic Hall of Fame twice – first as an individual and then as part of championship teams. His daughter, Susan (Mercik) Davis, followed in his footsteps, becoming an outstanding field hockey player and later joining him in the Hall of Fame. They became the second father-daughter duo to receive this honor. Bob's induction speech highlighted his deep affection for Enfield and the people who shaped his athletic journey. He valued his community, coaches, and teammates, cherishing lifelong friendships formed during his athletic career. In his later years, Bob remained in Enfield, marrying Joyce Monette and raising four children. He operated a certified public accounting firm, showing his versatility beyond sports. His passing was announced by his daughter, who remembered him as a loving, strong, and wise father. Bob leaves behind a legacy of sportsmanship, leadership, and love for his family and community.
