Illinois Honors McHenry Teacher for Early-Career Excellence
A high school educator in McHenry has been recognized among the best in Illinois, joining nearly 450 teachers, staff, and volunteers who received prestigious awards for their dedication to education.
Kathryn Larson, a social studies teacher, was awarded the Meritorious Service Award for her early-career achievements. The ceremony, organized by the Illinois State Board of Education, celebrates those who go above and beyond to enhance learning environments across the state.
This year marked the 52nd annual event, featuring video messages from the governor and speeches from past winners, adding a sense of prestige to the occasion. The celebration also honored last year’s Far North Suburbs Teacher of the Year, who advanced to compete for the statewide title.
Larson, now in her third year of teaching, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to connect with fellow educators who share her passion for student success. She highlighted the value of exchanging strategies for creating engaging and effective classrooms.
Last year, Larson’s teaching load included Advanced Placement courses such as Government, Revolutions Throughout History, and Psychology—courses designed to challenge students and provide college credit opportunities.
Beyond the classroom, Larson holds a degree in history education from Illinois State University, supplemented by additional studies in political science, sociology, and psychology, ensuring her students benefit from a well-rounded perspective.
A testament to her impact, this recognition underscores the vital role educators play in shaping the future of Illinois’ students.
