Former President Jimmy Carter, who held office from 1977 to 1981, is lying in state at the Capitol Rotunda ahead of his funeral. He faced numerous challenges during his presidency, including economic problems and international crises. Despite losing his reelection bid to Ronald Reagan, he gained a new appreciation from historians later on. Carter, a Georgia Democrat and the 39th U. S. president, passed away at the age of 100 on December 29. His body arrived in Washington on Tuesday, part of the state funeral rituals. Carter will be laid to rest next to his wife, Rosalynn Carter, at the home they built before his political career kicked off. They lived there except for the years spent in the Georgia Governor's Mansion and the White House.
