A Man of Many Hats: Remembering Larry Johnson

Larry Johnson was a jack of all trades. He was a sports cartoonist, a radio host, and even an ordained minister. But if you asked him, he'd say he really wanted to be a musician. He believed that talent gets you started, but passion is what keeps you going. Larry knew this firsthand, growing up with a talented musician father and trying his hand at various arts. He faced rejection 379 times before the Boston Globe finally published his illustration. Larry's career spanned decades, from the Globe to WEEI, where he co-hosted the "Mustard and Johnson" talk show for 25 years. His co-host, Craig Mustard, remembered Larry for his humor, wit, and unique perspective. Larry had a special way of looking at things, like from 30, 000 feet, Mustard said.

As a sports cartoonist, Larry had to poke fun at athletes, which could be tough because he liked people easily. He once said he didn't like meeting athletes because it made it hard to draw them later. But that's what made his cartoons special. They were funny, yes, but they also showed a deeper understanding of human nature. Larry's life wasn't all about work. He married Sharon Chandler, a teacher, and they ran a business together, selling his fine arts paintings and prints. He was also a minister, adding another layer to his already impressive resume. His daughter, Nicole, remembered him as a natural encourager with a passion for life. Larry passed away in his sleep at the age of 75. He leaves behind a legacy of laughter, wisdom, and a unique perspective that touched many lives.
