A New Chapter for Capitol View Elementary
In a move set to transform education in Atlanta, the old Capitol View Elementary School is getting a fresh start. The building, which has been empty since 2017, is set to become the TGR Learning Lab Atlanta. This project is a team effort between Atlanta Public Schools (APS), the TGR Foundation, and the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation.
A 25-Year Lease with Big Plans
The plan involves a 25-year lease, with options to extend, approved in late 2025. This means the historic 1928 building will soon be a hub for STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) learning. It's not just about giving students a cool place to learn; it's about giving them real-world experiences and career exploration opportunities.
Benefits Beyond the Classroom
This isn't just good news for students. The surrounding community will also benefit. The project has the backing of local neighborhood associations and is expected to create jobs and boost the local economy. It's a win-win situation.
A Vision for the Future
Dr. Bryan Johnson, the superintendent of APS, sees this as a way to make the most of old school buildings. By partnering with organizations like the TGR Foundation, APS can offer students more than just traditional classroom learning. It's about creating new opportunities and making sure these buildings are useful to the community.
A Collaborative Effort
Kendyl Baugh Moss, from the TGR Foundation, is excited about bringing STEAM education to Atlanta. The foundation's goal is to help students explore their passions and prepare for college and careers. With the support of the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation and APS, they're well on their way to making that happen.
Atlanta Partners for Education (APFE) played a big role in making this partnership happen. They'll continue to support the project as it moves forward. The transformation of Capitol View Elementary is expected to be completed by late 2027.
A Brighter Future Ahead
This project shows what can happen when schools, nonprofits, and communities work together. It's not just about building a new learning space; it's about creating a brighter future for students and the community.
