Jack Smith, known for his role as a special counsel in the Justice Department, is making a big move. He's joining forces with three other former federal prosecutors to open a new law firm. The team includes Tim Heaphy, David Harbach, and Thomas Windom, all with extensive experience in public service.
The firm is set to launch in January and will offer a wide range of legal services. This includes investigations and litigation. Heaphy mentioned that their practice will focus on integrity, commitment, and strong advocacy for both public and private clients.
These lawyers have been key players in investigating former President Donald Trump. Smith, along with Harbach and Windom, secured indictments against Trump. These were related to efforts to overturn the 2020 election results and the illegal retention of classified documents.
Heaphy, a former U. S. Attorney, led the investigation into the January 6, 2021, attack on the U. S. Capitol. This was part of a broader look into Trump's attempts to stay in power after losing the 2020 election to Joe Biden.
Heaphy is leaving his current law firm, Willkie Farr & Gallagher. This firm had deals with Trump to avoid executive orders targeting their business. Heaphy joined Willkie in 2023.
After Trump won the 2024 election, Smith dropped the criminal cases he was overseeing. This was due to a Justice Department policy against prosecuting sitting presidents. The current Justice Department under Trump has criticized these cases. They have also fired career prosecutors and FBI agents involved, alleging political motives.
Smith has defended his investigations, calling claims of political influence "ludicrous. " He is scheduled to testify before the Republican-controlled House Judiciary Committee.
