A New Life on the Move
She had just left a small apartment and her kids were grown.
The silence that once felt like freedom now seemed empty, so she tried volunteering and joining groups but nothing stuck. Travel was a dream, yet the costs of divorce, single parenting and living in an expensive city made it impossible. She stopped scrolling through social media to avoid jealousy.
The Unexpected Invitation
One day she opened an email that had been thrown away. It mentioned a website where people could trade pet and house‑sitting for free stays in other homes. She thought it was a trick, so she deleted the message. Later she went back to her trash and clicked the link. The membership fee was comparable to a hotel night, and after reading reviews she decided to give it a try.
First Steps
Her first assignments were short stays close to home.
Soon she landed a longer position by a lake, caring for a dog and cat in exchange for a waterfront home. The experience showed her that she could earn enough to live beyond her apartment, so she ended the lease and started traveling.
Freedom & Growth
The lifestyle not only saved money but also gave her time for writing and improved relationships with her adult daughters. By letting them grow independently, she found new space to do the same for herself. She now travels from one beautiful home to another, with plans in San Francisco and Mexico ahead.
She still returns to Seattle for medical appointments and family visits, but she has no fixed home. The idea of staying put feels unappealing when there is still so much adventure to pursue. She reflects on how far she has come since the day she thought this life was too good to be true.
