A New Name for a Famous Arts Center
The board of trustees has decided to add President Donald Trump's name to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The new name is now The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts. New signs are being installed, and the center's social media accounts have been updated to reflect this change.
Controversy Surrounding the Name Change
There is uncertainty about whether the board has the authority to change the name. The building was designated as a memorial to Kennedy by Congress in 1964. The Kennedy family is unhappy with the decision. Maria Shriver, Kennedy's niece, called the idea "beyond comprehension."
Trump's Involvement and Claims
Trump stated that the center was in poor condition before his involvement. He claimed to have saved the center and attracted more donors. He also plans to request additional funding from Congress. After taking office, Trump made significant changes to the center, replacing most of the board and becoming the new chair.
Previous Name Changes
This is not the first time a building has been renamed after Trump. Earlier this month, the US Institute of Peace also received his name, following changes made by the Trump administration.
