A New Stage Family Forms on Broadway
Don Cheadle and Ayo Edebiri step onto the Booth Theatre together for the first time, portraying a father and daughter in David Auburn’s play “Proof.”
The story follows Catherine, who pauses her own dreams to care for her aging professor father while she herself battles personal challenges. The actors bring their real‑life connection to the stage: Cheadle checks on Edebiri’s bedtime and reminds her of tomorrow’s show, echoing the playful bond between their on‑stage roles.
The play digs into the give‑and‑take between parents and children.
Edebiri says playing a caregiver made her reflect on how roles reverse as people age, turning the parent into someone who needs care. She embraces the emotional depth of the part, even though she had already gained fame through film and television.
Cheadle’s career spans more than 50 films, from the dramatic “Flight” to the action‑packed “Ocean’s Eleven.” He recalls that each new role feels like a milestone, yet the future always holds more surprises. His work in “Hotel Rwanda” earned him an Oscar nomination, a testament to his passion for meaningful stories.
For both actors, “Proof” marks their first Broadway outing.
Cheadle describes the theater’s energy like a roller coaster: the anticipation backstage, the cue lights, and the rush of stepping onto stage. He hopes for a magical experience that keeps the audience engaged.
When asked if they’ll team up again, both answered in sync—Edebiri said “Not at all,” and Cheadle replied, “Kinda hope not.” Their playful exchange shows that even on stage, they feel like family.
The show runs at the Booth Theatre until July 19. Tickets are available through Blackbird Collective PBC.
