A New Star in the cRPG Sky: Epictellers' Bold Move
Barcelona-based studio Epictellers Entertainment is making a bold move into the cRPG genre with their upcoming game, Starfinder: Afterlight.
A New Contender in the cRPG Space
Unlike many studios hesitant after Baldur's Gate 3's success, Epictellers is diving headfirst into the competitive cRPG market. Their Kickstarter campaign has already surpassed its goal, raising over €530K in just a few weeks.
A Passion Project from AAA Veterans
Co-founders Ricard Pillosu and Albert Jane Goset bring a wealth of AAA game development experience but wanted to create something more personal. Both are avid tabletop RPG fans and Dungeon Masters, and their love for the genre shines through in Starfinder: Afterlight.
A Unique Science Fantasy Universe
The game is set in a science fantasy universe, blending magic and interplanetary travel. Think Guardians of the Galaxy rather than hard sci-fi, with a comedic tone and a focus on fun. The story revolves around an extinction event called the Afterlight, which the player must prevent.
Quality and Modding Support
Epictellers aims for a quality level similar to Owlcat's games, not Baldur's Gate 3. They're using the Godot engine and plan to release modding tools shortly after launch. The game will feature:
- Branching narratives
- Multiple ways to complete quests
- Optional romances
Kickstarter Success and Future Plans
The Kickstarter campaign has been a huge success, with over 9,650 backers. The funds will be used to add more voice acting and other features. Epictellers is also working with Paizo, the IP holders, to bring the Starfinder universe to life.
A Bold Move with Potential
Despite the challenges of adapting a tabletop RPG to a video game, Epictellers seems committed to making Starfinder: Afterlight a unique and engaging experience. It's a bold move, but one that could pay off if they deliver on their promises.
