A New Take on a Famous Love Story

USASaturday, March 7, 2026

The hit series Love Story reimagined the romance between John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette, but many people close to the real couple said the show missed the mark.

The drama was written by Ryan Murphy and produced by Brad Simpson, who claimed to have used a biography and interviews for research. They tried to recreate Bessette’s look, but not her voice, because only a short clip exists. Critics argue that the show turned their private lives into entertainment.

Jack Schlossberg, son of Caroline Kennedy, told a TV host that the series treats his family as background scenery. He urged viewers to remember it is “fiction” and not a factual account.

Annette Bening, who once worked with Bessette, said the show’s scene where a character dresses her for a movie premiere is made up. She explained that the event never happened and she was not involved.

Daryl Hannah, who dated JFK Jr. before he married Bessette, wrote a letter saying the show misrepresented her as “irritating” and “self‑absorbed.” She criticized the series for turning real people into plot devices, calling it misogynistic.

Hannah denied any of the negative traits shown and insisted she never used drugs or pressured anyone into marriage.

Narciso Rodriguez, the designer of Bessette’s wedding dress, said the series dramatized a fitting that never occurred. He recalled only a quick session in a bathroom, with no drama or mishaps. Rodriguez said he made the dress simply for his friend and not for a television narrative.

The series sparked debate about how media can distort real stories. While the creators claimed research, many feel the show leans too much on sensationalism and ignores the truth.
