A Quick Way to Spot Bad Bugs in Chicken

Imagine you're at a farm or a factory, looking for nasty bacteria like Clostridium perfringens in chicken products. This bug can make people sick, so finding it fast is super important. Scientists came up with a clever way to do that using something called helical loop-mediated isothermal amplification, or HAMP for short. They tweaked the temperature, time, and mix of stuff used in HAMP to make it work better.

HAMP is like a superhero that can tell the difference between C. perfringens and 18 other common chicken-bugs. It's also really careful, spotting tiny amounts of the bad stuff that other tests might miss. When chicken hasn't been treated yet, HAMP can find as little as 680 nasty bugs per gram. But after waiting for 5 or 10 hours, it gets even better, finding as few as 68 or 6. 8 bugs per gram. That's pretty impressive! They tested HAMP on ready-to-eat chicken products and found it was just as good as the old-fashioned way of growing the bugs in a lab. This shows that HAMP has big potential for quickly and accurately checking food for bad bugs right where it's made. Plus, it's the first time anyone's used HAMP to find C. perfringens. Pretty cool, huh?
