Aaron Rodgers: A New Start in Pittsburgh
Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh, USAFriday, June 6, 2025
Rodgers will be replacing Wilson and Fields, who made six starts in Pittsburgh last season. He will have a new No. 1 weapon in DK Metcalf, who worked out with Rodgers this spring. The Steelers acquired Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks in a big trade and later dealt George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys. The team also brought back quarterback Mason Rudolph on a two-year, $8 million deal and drafted Ohio State quarterback Will Howard in the sixth round. This move is a big gamble for the Steelers, who have repeatedly relied on their defense and a run-heavy attack to support their quarterbacks. If it works, Rodgers could be the quarterback who ends Tomlin's eight-year postseason winless drought. If it doesn’t, the Steelers might find themselves in familiar territory, struggling to make it past the regular season.
The Steelers entered free agency with an estimated $60. 1 million in cap space. They were down to about $34 million before a Rodgers deal. Rodgers said previously he would play for $10 million per year, so that could leave the Steelers with some wiggle room for other deals if they need it. The team might want to push all its chips into the middle with a 41-year-old QB behind center, but they can create some more cap space with a variety of moves. The most logical way would be to extend outside linebacker T. J. Watt, who is entering the final year of his contract, although the edge rusher market has spiked this offseason.
