Afrikaners in America: A Controversial Move
South AfricaTuesday, May 13, 2025
Despite these efforts, some Afrikaners feel threatened. They believe that the new law is discriminatory and that they are at risk of being harmed. This belief is echoed by some right-wing organizations and even some prominent figures, like Elon Musk. However, statistics show that the number of farmers killed each year, regardless of race, is relatively low compared to the overall murder rate in the country.
The South African government has strongly denied these claims. They argue that Afrikaners are among the richest and most economically privileged groups in the country. They also point out that the far-right Afrikaners seeking refugee status are a small minority and do not represent the majority of the Afrikaner community.
This move by the US has also strained relations between the two countries. The US has expelled South Africa's ambassador and paused aid funding, including funds for HIV/AIDS programs. This has created deep anxiety in South Africa, especially with the looming threat of higher trade levies.
In the meantime, the US continues to block refugee admissions from other countries, like Haiti and Afghanistan. This has led some to question the US's refugee policy and whether it is consistent with its laws and values.
