AI & Dog Heart Health: A Promising Match
Cambridge, United KingdomWednesday, October 30, 2024
Researchers started by using a database of human heart sounds and adapted an AI program to work for dogs. They tested this AI on nearly 800 dogs of various sizes and ages at vet clinics in the UK. The results? The AI agreed with a cardiologist's assessment over 50% of the time. It also graded the murmurs correctly about 90% of the time, helping vets decide the best treatment.
Small dogs and older ones are more likely to have heart murmurs. The good news is that there are medications available for dogs, unlike humans who usually need surgery. This study shows how AI can be a useful tool for vets, especially those who might not have as much experience with heart sounds.
