Yann LeCun, a top researcher at Meta, has a simple message for those worried about AI taking over the world: chill out, it's not happening. He thinks the idea that AI will become smarter than humans and threaten our existence is just "ridiculous."
LeCun, often called one of the "Godfathers of AI," says today's AI models, like ChatGPT, aren't as smart as they seem. Sure, they can generate impressive text, but they lack basic skills like memory, reasoning, and understanding the physical world. He says these AI models are good at predicting the next word, but that doesn't mean they're truly intelligent.
Some big names in the tech industry, like Nvidia's Jensen Huang and OpenAI's Sam Altman, think we're close to creating AI that can match or even surpass human intelligence. LeCun, however, isn't so sure. He thinks there's a lot of hype around AI's capabilities, and we're still far from creating an AI that can do everything a human can.
LeCun isn't against the idea of advanced AI, but he thinks it won't come from the current AI models. He wants people to be more realistic about what AI can and can't do. After all, just because an AI can talk doesn't mean it's as smart as a house cat.
