AI vs Bitcoin: A New Race in West Texas
Texas, Abilene, USAMonday, October 7, 2024
Bitcoin miners, previously dominant in the area, are now pivoting to AI due to decreasing profits. After the bitcoin halving event in April, the incentive to mine new tokens dropped, prompting miners to search for new revenue streams. AI infrastructure, needing large amounts of power and data centers, aligns perfectly with what miners have to offer. Companies like Bit Digital and Hut 8 have already started making money from AI, with Bit Digital even turning to AI to generate $92 million annually.
Crusoe Energy Systems, known for helping oil companies convert wasted energy into useful resources, sees AI as a part of their vision from the start. Lancium, on the other hand, initially focused on bitcoin mining but now aims to manage AI data centers that can balance the power grid by turning energy demand into a dial that can be adjusted quickly. Both companies plan to draw power primarily from renewable sources, ensuring that these energy-intensive AI operations are sustainable.
