Alabama Launches New Education Fund for Private Schools and Homeschooling
Alabama, Montgomery, USAWednesday, January 1, 2025
At first, only families with an income at or below 300% of the federal poverty level can join. That's about $77, 460 for a family of three. In 2027, this income limit will vanish. Students with disabilities, military families, and low-income families get top priority.
Governor Kay Ivey, a Republican, pushed for this bill in her State of the State address last year. Supporters of the bill see it as a new choice for parents, especially those in low-performing school zones. Critics, however, worry it will siphon money from public schools. They also question if low-income families will truly benefit, as private school tuition often exceeds $7, 000.
Families keen on applying have until April 7 to get their applications in for the next school year.
