Alabama vs. Auburn: The Basketball Rivalry
Saturday, February 15, 2025
In 2019, Alabama made a bold move by hiring Nate Oats, a young, analytics-focused coach from Buffalo. This decision has paid off, with Alabama making four straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including three trips to the Sweet 16 and a historic Final Four berth last year. Oats has also turned the Crimson Tide into a program that develops future NBA players.
Auburn's basketball journey has also seen its share of highs and lows. Former head coach Sonny Smith led the program from 1978 to 1989, making five straight NCAA Tournament appearances and reaching the Elite Eight in 1986. Smith also brought in Charles Barkley, Auburn's most famous alum. Before Smith, Joel Eaves won the SEC Championship in 1960 and is the all-time winningest coach in program history.
However, Auburn faced a dark period between 2003 and 2018, missing the NCAA Tournament for 15 years. Desperate to lift the program, they hired Bruce Pearl, who brought baggage from his previous stint at Tennessee. Despite initial struggles, Pearl's leadership has led to an NCAA Tournament berth in 2018 and a historic Final Four run in 2019. Auburn has since missed just one postseason and is poised to make a fourth-straight trip to the big dance this year.
This matchup between Alabama and Auburn is more than just a big game in the SEC. It showcases how rival programs can push each other to invest and succeed at higher levels by taking risks that pay off. Both teams have evolved significantly over the years, and their commitment to each other has led to this historic moment.
