Previous searches have scanned large parts of the sky and flagged interesting signals, but then researchers had to manually sort through them. This manual process is slow and limits how much data can be analyzed. That's where COSMIC comes in. COSMIC is a computer system that works with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array in New Mexico. It's designed to automate the search for alien signals. COSMIC looks for tightly focused radio signals that could come from a small source, like a planet. It also checks for Doppler shifting, which can tell us if the signal is moving away from or toward us.

The system then uses filters to rule out signals that match known human-made emissions. Any remaining signals are flagged for further review. COSMIC analyzed over 950, 000 individual telescope pointings as part of the VLA Sky Survey. Despite initially flagging thousands of interesting signals, none passed all the filters.
