Ever wondered how tech giants like Amazon keep their AI programs running? It's no secret that these programs need a lot of electricity. So, Amazon is trying something new: investing in nuclear power. They're putting over half a billion dollars into three projects in Washington, Virginia, and Pennsylvania.
Why nuclear? Well, it generates electricity without much greenhouse gas, and that's good for the environment. Plus, it creates jobs. But there's a catch. Nuclear power also creates radioactive waste, and we don't have a final place to store it yet.
Amazon's not alone in this. Google and Microsoft are also looking into nuclear power for their data centers. But building these small modular reactors (SMRs) isn't cheap. Some people think it might not be worth the cost.
The goal is to have these SMRs up and running in the next few years. But until then, we'll have to wait and see if this is the right move for our energy future.
