Amazon's Just Walk Out Technology: A Retailer's Dilemma

Amazon's Just Walk Out technology, once hailed as a revolutionary solution for cashierless shopping, has become a costly and challenging endeavor for the retailer. Initially expected to transform the retail landscape with its innovative computer vision-based checkout system, the technology has been met with skepticism by many retailers who have since opted for simpler methods like mobile checkout apps or traditional checkout lanes. Amazon invested heavily in Just Walk Out, spending around $1 billion per year on research and development costs and capital expenditures from 2019 to 2020. However, the company's own supermarkets have not seen widespread adoption of the technology, with many choosing to stick with traditional checkout methods instead.

Despite this, Amazon has found success in selling its Just Walk Out technology to third-party retailers, with over 200 stores now using the system. The company expects to double this number this year, according to Jon Jenkins, a former executive who oversaw the development of the technology. However, Amazon's phasing out of Just Walk Out from its own supermarkets has been seen by some as a setback for the technology. But Jenkins disputes this characterization, saying that the technology proved itself capable in tests at large supermarkets with hundreds of people in the store at the same time.
