Apple Pauses AI News Summaries After Factually Incorrect Headlines

Apple has decided to halt its AI-generated news summary notifications temporarily. This move comes after a series of false headlines created quite a stir among journalists and news outlets. The feature, part of Apple's Intelligence service introduced in 2024, was designed to give users quick news updates. However, things didn't go as planned. In December, BBC News found itself in an awkward situation when Apple's AI sent out a false push notification. The notification claimed that a man arrested for a high-profile murder had died by suicide. This wasn't the only instance of false information. Other publishers also faced similar issues with inaccurate AI-generated news summaries.

BBC News tried to reach out to Apple about the issue, but the tech giant didn't respond until January. At that point, Apple mentioned it was working on making it clear that the summaries were AI-generated. Despite this, the National Union of Journalists and Reporters Without Borders called for the removal of the AI feature, pointing out the inability of AI systems to consistently provide accurate information. Recently, an Apple spokesperson told the BBC that the company is working on improvements and plans to release them in a future software update. Meanwhile, Apple has added a warning in the Settings app, noting that the Notification Summaries feature "may contain errors. " For now, summaries outside the News and Entertainment category will still appear, but in italics.
