Apple Pauses AI News Summaries After Factually Incorrect Headlines
UK, United KingdomFriday, January 17, 2025
BBC News tried to reach out to Apple about the issue, but the tech giant didn't respond until January. At that point, Apple mentioned it was working on making it clear that the summaries were AI-generated. Despite this, the National Union of Journalists and Reporters Without Borders called for the removal of the AI feature, pointing out the inability of AI systems to consistently provide accurate information.
Recently, an Apple spokesperson told the BBC that the company is working on improvements and plans to release them in a future software update. Meanwhile, Apple has added a warning in the Settings app, noting that the Notification Summaries feature "may contain errors. " For now, summaries outside the News and Entertainment category will still appear, but in italics.
