Grijalva's kindness and sense of humor were also remembered. U. S. Rep. David Schweikert, a Republican from Arizona, shared that Grijalva was always kind and had a great sense of humor. He was also a fellow animal lover, and they often worked together on animal protection issues.
Grijalva's fight for justice was fearless. U. S. Sen. Ed Markey, a Democrat from Massachusetts, noted that Grijalva fought for climate justice, economic justice, and health justice. He was a true champion for Arizona, the environment, and working people.
Grijalva's leadership was singular. He mentored generously and was an incredible friend. U. S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat from New York, noted that she will always be grateful for his lifelong courage and commitment.
Grijalva's legacy includes his critical work with the late Representative Donald McEachin to draft the groundbreaking Environmental Justice for All Act. This bill confronts the legacy of environmental racism that disproportionately impacts communities of color and low wealth. The League of Conservation Voters President Gene Karpinski noted that they are forever grateful for Representative Grijalva's historic leadership.
Grijalva's passing has left a deep void in the hearts of many. His legacy of service, kindness, and courage will be deeply missed. His fight for justice and equality will continue to inspire many.
