Art or Trash? The Story of the Mistaken Beer Cans

Imagine walking into a museum and stumbling upon two empty beer cans lying on the floor. What might seem like trash at first glance is actually a piece of art by French artist Alexandre Lavet. This particular piece, titled 'All The Good Times We Spent Together,' is a testament to the unexpected places art can pop up. Unfortunately, not everyone knows this. A mechanic at the LAM museum in Lisse, Netherlands, thought he was doing a good deed by picking up what he believed was litter and throwing it in the trash. It was only thanks to the quick thinking of curator Elisah van den Bergh that the artwork was saved from a garbage truck's jaws. The mistake isn't what makes this story interesting. Instead, it's the idea that art can be so convincingly realistic that it's mistaken for the real thing. Lavet's cans, despite their deceiving appearance, are actually aluminum sculptures hand-painted to resemble ordinary beer cans. They're a tribute to the artist's social life in Brussels and the friends he met between 2013 and 2016. The minimalist artist has displayed this piece in various museums in the Netherlands and Berlin.

The LAM museum often places art in unconventional spots to surprise visitors and keep them engaged. According to Froukje Budding, a museum spokesperson, the purpose is to make visitors question what they see and experience art in new ways. However, after this mix-up, the staff may need to rethink where they place certain pieces to avoid another close call with the trash bin. Art, after all, is meant to evoke emotions and provoke thoughts, even if it means raising questions about its authenticity. And in the case of these beer cans, it certainly got people talking. The mechanic, by the way, faced no repercussions. He was just doing his job, after all, albeit with a bit of confusion.
