Aurora Plans for Green Future with EV Charging Stations

Aurora is taking steps to embrace electric vehicles by planning to install 10 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at its new Public Works building. This move was recently discussed at the Infrastructure and Technology Committee meeting. The city is looking to partner with Blink Network, LLC, a Maryland-based company, to install these charging stations. The total cost for the city would be $68, 396, with half of this amount covered by a grant from ComEd. This grant offers up to $8, 000 per station for up to 10 stations. Ian Wade, from the city's Engineering Division, explained that the grant inspired officials to find a reliable vendor to create a consistent charging network across the city.

The plan includes four dual-port charging stations at the front of the building, accessible to both city employees and the public. Since each station can charge two vehicles at once, this will actually accommodate eight vehicles simultaneously. An additional six dual-port stations will be installed for the sole use of city vehicles. Inside the fleet storage area, Blink will prepare 10 to 12 more charging stations for future use as larger EVs become available. Wade emphasized that the city sought to develop a long-term strategy rather than just settling for an off-the-shelf product. Blink was chosen after a careful selection process involving three vendors. Alderman Brandon Tolliver, 7th Ward, supports this initiative, particularly the prospect of charging larger vehicles in the future. The city is also exploring other grant programs to further expand their EV charging infrastructure. The decision to install these charging stations is part of a proactive approach to meet future transportation needs. By planning ahead, Aurora hopes to support the shift towards greener, more sustainable transportation options.
