Backyard Treasure: A Mastodon Jaw Unearthed in New York

Imagine this: You're digging in your garden, expecting to find nothing but dirt and roots, and suddenly, you unearth something extraordinary! This happened to a man in upstate New York. He wasn't looking for fossils, but that's exactly what he found. It all started with two large teeth, which he initially thought were baseballs. But upon closer inspection, he realized these weren't any ordinary teeth. They belonged to a mastodon, a prehistoric relative of the elephant. The state museum and SUNY Orange's behavioral sciences department teamed up to excavate the site. They uncovered a full, well-preserved mastodon jaw, along with pieces of a toe bone and a rib fragment.

This jawbone is special because it hasn't been found in New York in over a decade. In fact, there have been more than 150 mastodon fossils discovered statewide, with about a third found in Orange County alone. The jawbone offers scientists a unique opportunity to learn more about the ecology of mastodons and the Ice Age ecosystems in the region. By studying these fossils, researchers hope to gain insights into the mastodon's age, diet, and habitat. The fossils will be carbon-dated and analyzed, and they'll be put on display for the public to see in 2025.
