Backyard Treasure: A Mastodon Jaw Unearthed in New York
Scotchtown, NY, USAThursday, December 19, 2024
This jawbone is special because it hasn't been found in New York in over a decade. In fact, there have been more than 150 mastodon fossils discovered statewide, with about a third found in Orange County alone. The jawbone offers scientists a unique opportunity to learn more about the ecology of mastodons and the Ice Age ecosystems in the region.
By studying these fossils, researchers hope to gain insights into the mastodon's age, diet, and habitat. The fossils will be carbon-dated and analyzed, and they'll be put on display for the public to see in 2025.
