Béla Fleck Steps Back from Kennedy Center Shows
Béla Fleck, an 18-time Grammy Award-winning banjo player, has announced the cancellation of his upcoming performances with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center.
Fleck's Statement
Fleck shared his decision on social media, stating that performing at the Kennedy Center has become too political. He expressed his hope to return when the focus is back on music and art.
"The Kennedy Center should be about music, not politics."
Kennedy Center's Response
Richard Grenell, the president of the Kennedy Center, responded on X, claiming that Fleck made the situation political by canceling. Grenell emphasized that the center welcomes everyone and prefers performers who avoid politics.
Fleck countered by stating that the center was already political and that music should be about expression and inclusivity.
Recent Changes at the Kennedy Center
The Kennedy Center has undergone significant changes recently. In February 2025, former president Deborah Rutter and other board members were replaced. The new board, which includes figures like Usha Vance and Laura Ingraham, voted to add President Trump's name to the center. This move has faced legal challenges from Democratic Congresswoman Joyce Beatty.
Other Artists Cancel Shows
Fleck is not alone in his decision. Other artists, including Stephen Schwartz, Chuck Redd, and The Cookers, have also withdrawn their performances. This wave of cancellations began when Trump announced his plans to oversee the center, leading to the withdrawal of shows like Hamilton and performances by Rhiannon Giddens and Issa Rae.
