Ben Shelton's Journey to the Australian Open Semi-Final and Broadcaster Criticism

Ben Shelton, a 22-year-old tennis player from Atlanta, has made it to the Australian Open semi-final for the first time. He beat Italy's Lorenzo Sonego with scores of 6-4, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (4) on Wednesday in Melbourne. This is only the second grand slam semi-final for Shelton, the first being at the 2023 US Open where he lost to Novak Djokovic. Shelton's win can be attributed to his steadier play on the ground. Even though Sonego had more winners, 63 to Shelton's 54, Sonego made way more unforced errors, 55 to Shelton's 33. After the match, Shelton expressed his delight, thanking Sonego for a tough game and the crowd for their support. However, Shelton wasn't pleased with the way some broadcasters have been treating players. During his on-court interview with former Davis Cup player John Fitzgerald, Shelton was asked if he expected any support in his next match. Fitzgerald joked that no one would cheer for Shelton, with his next opponent being either the defending champion Jannik Sinner or local favorite Alex De Minaur. Sinner later beat De Minaur.

Shelton found the comment disrespectful. In his press conference, he said he was shocked by how players were being treated by broadcasters. He mentioned an incident involving Novak Djokovic where an Australian broadcaster called Djokovic "overrated" and a "has-been". Djokovic skipped the customary on-court interview until he got a public apology. Shelton also recalled uncomfortable comments made during his post-match interview after beating Gael Monfils. The broadcaster asked if Monfils was old enough to be Shelton's dad, which Shelton found disrespectful. He believes broadcasters should be more supportive and help grow the sport. Shelton will face Jannik Sinner in the semi-final. Despite the potential lack of crowd support, Shelton seems ready, saying he knows some will cheer for him. Shelton has won two ATP titles but hasn't reached the quarter-finals in all four grand slams last year.
