Ben Shelton's Journey to the Australian Open Semi-Final and Broadcaster Criticism
Melbourne, AustraliaWednesday, January 22, 2025
Shelton found the comment disrespectful. In his press conference, he said he was shocked by how players were being treated by broadcasters. He mentioned an incident involving Novak Djokovic where an Australian broadcaster called Djokovic "overrated" and a "has-been". Djokovic skipped the customary on-court interview until he got a public apology.
Shelton also recalled uncomfortable comments made during his post-match interview after beating Gael Monfils. The broadcaster asked if Monfils was old enough to be Shelton's dad, which Shelton found disrespectful. He believes broadcasters should be more supportive and help grow the sport.
Shelton will face Jannik Sinner in the semi-final. Despite the potential lack of crowd support, Shelton seems ready, saying he knows some will cheer for him. Shelton has won two ATP titles but hasn't reached the quarter-finals in all four grand slams last year.
