Bible Lessons in Texas Schools: A New Curriculum Sparks Debate
Texas, USASaturday, November 23, 2024
This isn't the first time a Republican-led state has tried to increase religion's presence in schools. States like Oklahoma and Louisiana have also taken steps to bring more religious elements into classrooms. Texas, however, is the first to introduce Bible lessons in this way.
The Texas Education Agency created the curriculum after a 2023 law required them to. The lessons were released this spring and have sparked intense debate. More than 100 people testified at a board meeting, with emotions running high on both sides.
The board, consisting of 11 Republicans and 4 Democrats, initially supported the materials in a close vote. A newly appointed Republican board member voted in favor, but their seat will be filled by a Democrat next year. Governor Greg Abbott has publicly backed the instruction materials.
The constitutionality of the lesson plans remains uncertain. How Texas frames the curriculum will determine if it avoids First Amendment issues or not. This development is part of a broader trend by Republican-controlled states to incorporate religion into public school education.
