Biden’s Final Act: More Loan Forgiveness for Public Workers
Washington, USAFriday, December 20, 2024
With this latest move, Biden has now canceled $180 billion in federal student loans, benefitting 4. 9 million Americans. Among these, roughly 1 million borrowers have seen relief through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program. Biden aims to make higher education more accessible, stating, "From Day One of my Administration, I promised to make sure that higher education is a ticket to the middle class, not a barrier to opportunity. "
However, not all Americans have received the relief they hoped for. Biden's attempts at broader cancellation have faced legal challenges. His first attempt was blocked by the Supreme Court, and his second attempt is still tied up in court. Recently, he proposed a rule to cancel loans for people facing financial hardship, but it's unlikely to take effect.
Former President Trump hasn't detailed his plans for student loan relief if reelected. During his campaign, he criticized Biden's cancellation plans as illegal and "vile. " Republicans in Congress have also criticized Biden's efforts, arguing that they unfairly burden taxpayers who didn't attend college or have already repaid their loans.
