Biden's New Orleans Visit: Support and Hope for Bourbon Street

President Joe Biden and the first lady, Jill Biden, are set to visit New Orleans on Monday. The purpose of their visit is to meet with the families of those affected by the tragic Bourbon Street incident that occurred on New Year's Day. An Army veteran driving a truck caused the deaths of 14 people and injured 30 more in the French Quarter. "I'm with you in your grief, " President Biden stated. "Our whole nation feels the same. We'll be right by your side as you heal and mourn over the coming weeks. " Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry is expected to join the President. They will discuss the governor's request for a Presidential Disaster Declaration. This request is specifically for Public Assistance, including emergency protective measures and direct federal aid to support the state's response. The governor is also asking for individual assistance, mainly crisis counseling for those impacted.

Governor Landry commented, "I look forward to talking with President Biden about quickly approving my request for a Presidential Disaster Declaration. It's a crucial time, so I'm also urging Senate Democrats to swiftly confirm Kristi Noem as our Secretary of Homeland Security to avoid any gaps in leadership, especially after the Bourbon Street and Las Vegas attacks. " New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell is also seeking federal help to review the city's security plans and identify potential issues before the upcoming Carnival season. During their visit, President Biden and the first lady will attend an Interfaith Prayer Service for Peace and Healing hosted by the Archdiocese of New Orleans at St. Louis Cathedral in Jackson Square. The President is expected to arrive in New Orleans around 3:30 PM on Monday.
