Big Stop Sign for New Gas Station
A coalition of local residents has gathered more than 1,800 signatures on a petition demanding the cancellation of Buc‑ee’s proposed travel center. The 24/7 complex would span over 110 acres at the intersection of Interstate 71 and Ohio 39.
City Council’s Green Light
The city council had already approved a development plan allowing Buc‑ee’s to finance a $15 million infrastructure upgrade. The funding would cover the construction of three new roundabouts near I‑71 and Lucas Road—a project that received unanimous approval on June 2.
Township Annexation
Township trustees from Madison and Mifflin previously agreed to annex the land, a move that would enable the townships to retain some revenue while the city collects income tax and water/sewer fees. Additionally, the county would receive sales‑tax proceeds from the new business.
Community Concerns
Farmers and neighboring residents have expressed serious apprehensions:
- Nick Stadelman, a farmer just south of the site, worries that the wide roundabouts will impede his 18‑foot tractors from turning safely. He stated he would need to surrender part of his driveway if the project proceeds.
- The petition cites a range of potential issues: environmental damage, traffic hazards, loss of property value, noise and light pollution, and erosion of farmland.
- Petition authors argue that a large gas station is only a temporary asset with an inevitable decline in value over time.
