Bill Pascrell: A Legacy of Dedication and Criticism
Wednesday, August 28, 2024
At the time of his passing, Pascrell was the second-oldest House member, behind only retiring Rep. Grace Napolitano (D-Calif.). He was hospitalized for nearly a month this summer due to a fever linked to a respiratory illness.
Despite his illness, Pascrell remained devoted to serving his constituents and was re-admitted to the hospital just four days after being discharged to a rehabilitation center.
Pascrell's passing comes just months after the death of fellow New Jersey congressman Donald Payne Jr., who died in April at the age of 65. Pascrell had been running for re-election for his 9th District seat in November and will be deeply missed by his colleagues and constituents.
In accordance with state election law, Democratic county committee members will be able to select a new nominee by Aug. 29. Pascrell was the favorite against Republican Billy Prempeh, his opponent in his last two elections. He defeated Prempeh by more than double digits in 2022, and Joe Biden outperformed Trump in the 9th Congressional District by 19 percentage points.
Pascrell is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Elsie Marie Botto; three children; and five grandchildren.
