Bill Pascrell: A Legacy of Dedication and Criticism

In a sudden turn of events, the esteemed Democratic Representative Bill Pascrell, a beloved figure in New Jersey politics and a harsh critic of former President Donald Trump, has passed away at the age of 87. Pascrell's family confirmed his death on his official X account, stating that he died peacefully after a lifetime of dedicated service to his nation. Pascrell's political career spanned four decades, and he was renowned for his sharp wit and his unwavering commitment to America's working families. In recent years, he gained fame for his biting criticisms of Donald Trump, which he delivered with unapologetic zeal on X. Pascrell's passing comes as the Democrats prepare to convene in Chicago for their convention, where Vice President Kamala Harris will receive her party's presidential nomination. Tributs are expected to be made by Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.), House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), and Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), the former House speaker. Pascrell was a proud co-chair of the Congressional Italian-American Delegation and took great pride in his hometown of Paterson, New Jersey, the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. He will be fondly remembered for his tireless efforts on behalf of New Jersey families in Congress over the past 27 years.

At the time of his passing, Pascrell was the second-oldest House member, behind only retiring Rep. Grace Napolitano (D-Calif.). He was hospitalized for nearly a month this summer due to a fever linked to a respiratory illness. Despite his illness, Pascrell remained devoted to serving his constituents and was re-admitted to the hospital just four days after being discharged to a rehabilitation center. Pascrell's passing comes just months after the death of fellow New Jersey congressman Donald Payne Jr., who died in April at the age of 65. Pascrell had been running for re-election for his 9th District seat in November and will be deeply missed by his colleagues and constituents. In accordance with state election law, Democratic county committee members will be able to select a new nominee by Aug. 29. Pascrell was the favorite against Republican Billy Prempeh, his opponent in his last two elections. He defeated Prempeh by more than double digits in 2022, and Joe Biden outperformed Trump in the 9th Congressional District by 19 percentage points. Pascrell is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Elsie Marie Botto; three children; and five grandchildren.
